Chinese military researchers are proposing to weaponise the same Paracel seamount area where the USS Connecticut grounded in 2021, by hiding AI-enabled “smart” sea mines inside sonar blind spots to ambush subs and surface ships. This concept seeks to exploits acoustic “shadow zones” and could complicate U.S. undersea operations across the South China Sea region.
